| Gary James Lockhart, a 59-year-old author and researcher, died suddenly September 19 2001 at his home in Seattle. He was employed at City Ice, and wrote books on the side. |
| His first book, The Weather Companion, was published by John Wiley and Sons in 1989. It has been translated into several languages including Japanese and Portuguese. His second book, Natural Earth: The English Standard Reference on Herbal Substances, Volume I: The Herbal Center of Healing, was published by Earthpulse Press, Inc. in 1998. He has written about a dozen manuscripts, which have not yet been published. |
| Lockhart grew up in northeast Iowa with relatives after his parents died. He graduated from the University of Iowa in 1964 with a degree in general science. He taught high school science and math for a year and then worked as a chemist or engineer for seven years in the Chicago area. |
| He moved to Seattle in 1973, and then to Ketchikan, Alaska, where he was a chemist in the pulp mill. He returned to Seattle in 1976, when he started researching and writing books on herbal medicine, supporting himself with apartment management or janitor jobs. In late 1998, he estimated he had been researching herbal remedies for 22 years and had visited 40 libraries across the country in his quest. |

| Another of Lockhart's passions was maintaining the herb garden at the University of Washington, the oldest and largest such garden of its kind in the US. He was among a group protesting cutting of funds for the garden and won the right to keep it going, with private funding. |
| He was married briefly to a Canadian writer. He is survived by a brother, Bruce, and two nephews, Mark and Frank, from San Marcos, Texas; and two sisters: Ann, from Denver, Colorado; and Dorothy Lawrence from Ogden, Utah. |
