"This is a most impressive work. The research is evident throughout. The author obviously loves his subject, for there is evidence of much time spent in both the field and the library. You can delve into it on any number of approaches and find interesting nuggets of information. His infectious approach to trees carries over into his writing."
Walt Bubelis in Washington Park Arboretum Bulletin Summer 1990

"Anyone interested in trees can but enjoy the author's approach to such a massive task that is presented by writing a book involving the trees of an important city and making it possible for those of us not acquainted with this region to understand the great contribution the 740 varieties listed may make to the environment. Jacobson tells us the best localities to observe the trees and in many cases gives the historical background to the plantings, most of which have taken place in the last hundred years. The descriptions I have found most interesting, because he gives all the information that one would hope for in a reference book very concisely and with English names, the botanical names of the trees and the countries of origin and he has added many very useful notes."
John De Putron in International Dendrology Society Yearbook 1990
