Organic Harvest Fair
|
September brings the return of school, new TV programs,
football season, the beginning of fall, and heavy harvests for gardeners. Just
as June is the most floriferous month, September usually affords
the greatest yield of local produce. A delightful way exists to sample
Washington-grown organic fruits and vegetables. Attend Seattle
Tilth Association's 9th annual Organic Harvest Fair. For enjoying fine
food, friends and fun, this fair is a great thing, the only drawback being
its compaction into a mere 51/2 hours once a year. This year it is Saturday
the 7th, 10:30 to 4:00, at the Good Shepherd Center in Wallingford
(4649 Sunnyside Ave. N.). It's free. |
The Harvest Fair connects city consumers with country growers.
Tons of organic produce from 37 farmers is displayed, in an outdoor
market setting. The sights and smells create a sensory kaleidoscope. Savor
fresh apples and berries, greens, squashes, mushrooms, honey,
herbal vinaigrettes, etc. The fair is tailored to fit visitors of all interests,
from folks after bulk buys to those who just want lunch and
sightseeing. Various chefs display their talents using fresh ingredients, with
mouth-watering aromas wafting from their skillets. Bakeries and food
vendors supply dishes for lunching or snacking. |
Other attractions include a silent auction hosted by Sandy
Bradley, cooking demonstrations by top-notch chefs, gardening tips and tours
by Ciscoe Morris and other experts, a tomato taste contest, a raffle, a
panel discussion ("Trends in smallscale farming"), dancing and live
music. Conveniences include special activities in the children's garden, and
a will-call for your purchases. And as in all such festive gatherings, you
can hobnob with great diversity of people, meet new friends, connect
names to faces, etc. |
Whether you garden or not, surely you eat. And since you eat, why
not eat the best --and help support local farmers? Celebrate the
season's harvest. Especially, applaud the growers who raise this
organic harvest, forsaking chemicals. If you want to know more about Seattle Tilth,
its gardens and programs, call 633-0451, or better yet, visit the Tilth
booth at the fair.
