"The way some mollusks attach themselves to rocks and reefs, or as Spanish moss clings to cypress, so humans, in their social life, live emotionally by attachment to some interest, or to some person. The persons we love hold for us such charm that we virtually feel as if we draw nourishment from them. Also the object of our interest, be it a thing, a project, a study or a work of art, whatever it is, seems to give us added energy instead of draining it away. Man is thus spiritually attached to the world, or he dies, like the mollusk that is torn off the rock."
