Trees of Green Lake list

In December, 1991, a tree census was conducted at Green Lake. The goal was to count and identify every tree. The results were near the intention, but a few exceptions had to be made. Duck Island was excluded. Small, wild seedlings were ignored. Although both Norway and Sycamore Maples have purpleleaf specimens at the park, they could not be distinguished. Finally, the numerous, tightly crowded willows could not all be accounted for. Thus, as of March 1992, the total number of different kinds of trees noted was 162. The total number of trees is much more tenuous and quickly became dated. Both Mother Nature and the Seattle Parks Department worked on destroying some trees and adding others every year. In the following list, N signifies the tree is native in Seattle (15 total), and W means it grows wild at Green Lake (22 total). For the December 2001 Updated Survey, 9 species indicated as G have no specimens left at Green Lake, and those 52 species in boldface were either not noted in the 1991 survey (2) or were planted in 1992 or later (49) -- or in the case of the Oregon Myrtle, in 1992 it was a pruned bush, now it is an unpruned tree. Anyone who seeks to obtain or contribute more information is welcome to contact me.

Since 1992 Green Lake has had its path redone, a major vegetation management plan implemented, some trees have been labeled by the Green Lake Park Alliance (206 985-9235), and much wildlife habitat enhancement has been done. Now instead of 162 different kinds of trees there are 206! The following list still shows the 1991 quantities -- except for the species in bold.
